Kranzers and other southern-going members

Thanks for thinking about us, Mary.  We're having a great trip so far.  The Bay has been benevolent, but it looks like we'll pay the price soon.  Right now we're at anchor off Hospital Point in Portsmouth. The Soucys are nearby.  Compass Rose and Indy are visiting Brenda and Ray.  All of us have reservations at Tidewater Marina here in Portsmouth to wait out the impending storm.  There's lots to do here and plenty of boat action.  Bill and I were chased into the harbor by a submarine, and Fandango had a close encounter with an aircraft carrier.  We'll keep in touch.  Karen

Here is a recap of what has happened so far. Fandango was chased into the harbor by an aircraft carrier, but was able to skip in unscathed. While the Kranzers anchored out at Hospital Point, we tied up to the wall at the city dock. As Sandy marched forward, many boats hurried to get through the DS and find hurricane holes to hunker down in. Indy, Quaich, and Fandango went to the Tidewater Marina and have been there ever since Friday!
On Saturday, Colin and I rented a car and drove to the Rose Cottage in Oxford. Our inverter had been on the fritz and we had to replace our batteries in Urbana, VA...the inverter was threatening to destroy our new batteries and then it finally just quit! Talk about luck, Maddie and John said they had a new inverter in their attic! So, off to Oxford we went to pick it up. Larry and Leslie Storszenberger were in Oxford getting their yacht ready for the impending storm and graciously helped out by opening the Rose house. Leslie went on-line and printed out the owner's manual so we could install it. Yesterday, we spent the day installing the new inverter and it works just great! We are so grateful for the generosity of Larry and Leslie in taking time out of their preparations to help us and for providing us with printer paper! We are so happy that the Yates had a unit that would fit our boat!
Karen, Chris and Maddie have kept us well-fed with excellent feasting each evening. Maddie and I (Chris) went to the first grocery store that either of us has ever visited that had an elevator to the second floor!
All 3 boats are rocking and rolling in their slips but we are safe. I'll be happy when "Sandy" gets her infernal butt out of here, as will many others, I am sure. Hope this blog finds all backyackers safe, warm and dry.
    Chris
